The Importance Of Literacy In Science - 1287 Words

Literacy in science is an essential skill all students who study science should obtain. Literacy supports learners by helping them unpack ideas, develop understanding and solve problems (Krajcik, Sutherland, 2010). After teaching the students year twelve students for a week I realised many students could discuss their ideas; however, developing written explanations of concepts and theories was a problem. Because of this I made the decision to ensure that each lesson had a component of scientific literacy included. This was important to the students because I was teaching AS91165 (Appendix A), which is an external. What was important given where the three students were at? The three students I chose, Tim, John and Mark, are all well†¦show more content†¦He does not see science as literacy and this is something that I want to develop over the next five weeks. Perhaps making these connections will develop a passion for Chemistry as well. His report (Appendix D), has some consistent themes of lack of focus or engagement throughout lessons, as well as the need for self-drive to push himself further during school. This lack of attention could be to do with his ongoing focus on internals and the desire to receive all credits at excellence, the content being too difficult or too easy, or he sees little to no relevance for his future career in commerce (Barnes, Marateo, Ferris, 2007). I believe that the lack of relevance he sees of chemistry and missing fundamental knowledge due to his lack of attention during the teaching of externals has led to a difficulty when I am teaching, as I am trying to make links between all three externals. His NCEA repor t (Appendix E) shows his determination and drive to achieve, as well as a want of knowledge in all areas proves that he is the main driving force behind his success in all subjects. The strategies I implement need to develop self-belief and confidence in his external abilities. The focus for Tim is to develop a sense of importance of externals, the relevance to his life and develop higher expectations for his performance in externals. Mark was chosen to participate in this inquiry due to his drive for academic excellence.
